The Lighthouse Keeper's Letter
For thirty winters the old keeper has lived alone at the top of his lighthouse, a solitary figure in a place where the wind never quite stops. Every evening he climbs the narrow stone stairs and sets a flame to the great lamp, whose slow turn guides distant ships safely past the treacherous rocks below. One grey morning, after a long and restless storm, he finds a green bottle half-buried in the shingle. Inside, folded twice, is a letter written in a hand he has not seen in twenty years.
